The sea and the mountain range in a single panoramic view
One of the main reasons that motivate a visit to Asturias is, undoubtedly, its landscape and natural beauty. Sea, mountains, forests and valleys in a relatively small territory. If there is a place that synthesizes in a single image the spectacularity of the Asturian landscape that is, without a doubt, the Mirador del Fitu. It is no coincidence that it has been selected on numerous occasions amongst the most beautiful viewpoints in Spain.
Inaugurated in 1927, this concrete platform is suspended above the ground attached only to the mountain by a staircase that serves as its sustenance. From the top, the Fitu viewpoint offers an imposing 360-degree panoramic view that, on clear days, reaches from the coast of Ribadesella to the high peaks of the Picos de Europa, Redes or Ponga. The Cordillera and the Cantabrian Sea at the foot of this emblematic watchtower that can be easily accessed by car by the AS -260 road from Arriondas or from the coast by Caravia and Colunga.
Gateway to the Sierra del Sueve
If the view of the Fitu viewpoint is already worth the trip, it cannot be forgotten that it is a strategic location that serves as a gateway to numerous hiking trails of different difficulties in the Sierra del Sueve. This protected area is the closest mountain range to the Asturian coast and it reaches considerable heights such as the 1,161m of Pico Pienzu a few kilometres from the beach.
It is an ideal place to discover the forest richness of this territory with millenary forests such as the Tejeda del Sueve or the surprising Hayedo de la Viescona located just over 200m above sea level, unusual in this species, around the Stream of La Toya.
In the Sueve we can also see roe deer, wild boar, vultures and even fallow deer, a non-native species introduced in 1960. Also of note is the presence of asturcones, the local breed of horse that has inhabited this mountain range since its origins as a species and today, in a semi-wild state, is responsible for the natural maintenance of the vegetation.
The Mirador del Fitu viewpoint is, in short, an essential visit that can be accompanied by hiking, fauna and flora watching or a visit to nearby coastal destinations such as Lastres or the Jurassic Museum (MUJA).
