The Asturian coast offers multiple options to discover the life and seafaring tradition and one of those corners, where all the essence of the Cantabrian Sea is still kept, is Puerto de Vega. Located in the vicinity of the town of Navia, this picturesque town is one of the most visited places in western Asturias due to the unique atmosphere of its port and its rich gastronomic offer linked to fishing activity. 

All the life of the village revolves around the docks of its small port where the small wooden boats are moored that, after fishing daily, feed the best fish to local restaurants and taverns. From the eastern part of the fish market the Promenade of the Baluarte starts, that surrounds the cove and allows access to the Viewpoint of the same name. Unbeatable views of the port can be enjoyed here and its centuries-old battlements that protected it from attacks by enemy ships and piracy, especially in the period of splendour due to commercial activity and whaling in the seventeenth century.

Just on the western side of the port is the Mirador de la Riba viewpoint, which, after ascending through the narrow streets of the historic quarter that start from the port, provides a better insight into the whaling past of Puerto de Vega. Two cetacean ribs flank the reproduction of the first whaling contract, dating from 1608, and a sculpture pays homage to the period of the fishing boom in the space where the tide table was located. 

If you continue the ascent from the Mirador de la Riba (viewpoint), you can reach the Campo de la Atalaya, the highest point in the town, where the chapel of La Atalaya is located. This modest building was financed by the Sailors' and Merchants' Guild in 1613 in honour of Our Lady of the Watchtower, whose image, it is said, appeared floating nearby and protected the local sailors in their hard work. Nearby was the signal and smoke tower from where the alarm was given in case of danger or for "whaling" (or whale hunting) in the event of a sighting of cetaceans.

From here also starts one of the most spectacular trails of the western coast of Asturias, the Senda de la Costa Naviega, which links the beaches of Barayo to Navia, offering an amazing scenery of cliffs, dune fields, small coves and meadows.

Although it is not in the historic centre, a visit to the parish church of Santa Marina is highly recommended, considered to be the Cathedral of the rural Baroque of Western Asturias. Although the slate spires on the towers of the façade are surprising, it is in the interior where the church is at its most ostentatious. A single wide nave leads to the seven baroque altarpieces by the sculptor José Bernardo de la Meana, Master of Oviedo Cathedral in the 18th century. A striking 16th century organ, considered the oldest in Asturias, completes the treasure of this parish church. As if that were not enough, this was the resting place of the mortal remains of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos for three years before being transferred to Gijón, as a plaque on the side of the Epistle reminds us.
